About Mason Recreation Area

Located within the Huron-Manistee National Forests in northern Michigan, Mason Recreation Area encompasses over 6,000 acres of protected forestland that showcases the natural beauty of the region’s mixed hardwood and coniferous woodlands. The area is characterized by rolling hills, clear streams, and several small lakes that provide an ideal habitat for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, black bears, and numerous bird species. This recreation area was established to provide outdoor enthusiasts with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and cross-country skiing during winter months. Visitors can explore over 20 miles of designated trails including routes along the Pere Marquette River corridor, known for its excellent trout fishing and scenic views. The forested landscape also contains remnants of early logging operations, visible in historic interpretive sites, adding a cultural element to the recreation experience. Mason Recreation Area is popular among families and solo adventurers alike, offering easy-to-moderate trails and multiple campgrounds that cater to both tent campers and RV travelers. Its extensive network of trails is also notable for birdwatchers and photographers who come to capture the vibrant seasonal changes from lush summer greens to vivid fall foliage.
